NASA’s Mission is Space Exploration

NASA was in the news last month when NASA administrator Charles Bolden spoke to the news organization Al Jazeera about the direction given to him by President Obama:

“He charged me with three things. One was he wanted me to help re-inspire children to want to get into science and math, he wanted me to expand our international relationships, and third, and perhaps foremost, he wanted me to find a way to reach out to the Muslim world and engage much more with dominantly Muslim nations to help them feel good about their historic contribution to science…”

The outrageous revelation that Muslim outreach was “perhaps foremost” on his to-do list garnered the most media attention. But the statement as a whole reflects the wrong-headed approach to NASA’s future. NASA is to be used as a diplomatic tool.

Even the least contentious of the president’s directives, “to inspire children,” misses the point. Children learn best when they have purpose. At the inception of our space program, we were an ambitious nation. We wanted to be great, we wanted to build rockets, we wanted to go to the moon. Watch the movie October Sky for just one example of how a country that aspires to be great is a boon to education.

Democrats of today show disdain for all forms of enterprise and it undercuts the motivation for children to learn. How might the current agenda inspire children? Are we asking them to learn math so that they can join a gutted organization and seek help from the international community?

As a representative of District 24, I will make our position clear. NASA’s foremost mission is space exploration. It is a vital national interest and, as a country, we must retain our leadership role. We must make our voice heard, and I will take this message to Washington.

President Obama’s Failed Immigration Policy

Yesterday President Obama Outlined another failed policy for the American people. He told us that Federal Law is unenforceable and that we must legalize illegal immigrants before we secure the border.

As a 22 year Naval Officer, I can tell you that when you are on a sinking ship with holes in it in the middle of the ocean, you plug those holes first. Using President Obama’s problem solving techniques instead, we would find places on the ship to put the extra water and design a better ship diagram to send the builder.

Article 4, Section 4 of the Constitution states that “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union to protect each of them against Invasion;”

The Federal government led by a failing Commander in Chief is failing this nation. Where is the incumbent congresswoman for district 24 representing our needs? Quietly rubberstamping these failing policies.

It is time to put Principle Before Politics!

Tom Garcia: Tough on Illegal Immigration

As a proud American of Hispanic Heritage, it is clear to me that citizenship is a national treasure and one that should not be given out freely to those who trespass on our national sovereignty. I am particularly offended by those who are calling Arizona’s Immigration bill SB 1070 a bill of racism or racial profiling. I would ask these individuals to actually read the bill. Nowhere in the bill is profiling of any kind referred to or allowed. This bill simply puts an end to local governments tying the hands of law enforcement officers.

Arizona’s valiant law enforcement officers have the right under federal law to ask criminals and suspected criminals of their immigration status. Nothing else is provided for in this bill. For example, a Hispanic family eating lunch in McDonalds can not be asked to verify their status. This bill goes after the worst offenders. Law enforcement officers in Arizona don’t have the time or resources to go after illegal immigrants. All of their time is spent chasing criminals.

Pro-amnesty groups are attempting to take advantage of Arizona’s defense of its sovereignty by painting this bill as something that it isn’t. It is an outright lie to claim this bill authorizes racial profiling. If there are racists in this debate, they are the pro-amnesty groups who seek to undermine our legal immigration process.

As a boy, my father was an Air Force Officer stationed in Tucson, AZ and I can sympathize with the residents there as crime continues to rise to unprecedented levels. The federal government has failed to comply with its constitutional requirement to protect each state from invasion. Arizona’s immigration bill has one purpose and one purpose alone; to protect tax paying citizens from criminals unlawfully in our country.

As Congressman for Florida’s 24^th District, I will propose national legislation to check the status of all suspected criminals. If we cannot deport illegals who then go on to commit other crimes, wherever they may be, then our national sovereignty truly is at stake.

Our campaign has led the fight as the first congressional campaign to demand comprehensive shoreline surveillance against terrorism. We are now ready and willing to lead the fight to protect our borders and the safety of United States citizens. False accusations of racism are being used to prevent Arizona from doing what any rationally run state must do. Deportation of foreign criminals is not racism.
